We are very aware of our mortality. We know that everyone dies at some point. We intuitively know but refuse to admit that there is no meaning in ones suffering. We tell ourselves illusory comfort like 'its all god's plan', or it is fate. As a result, we play our game of attaching value to ourselves and things in order to temporarily escape this truth. We are creatures who are biologically programmed to play the game of life. We construct illusory truths and frameworks in order to provide rules of the game. We play it with all our hearts and our construct of ourselves. We fear death because it's the absence of what we think as ourselves. The anxiety to lose our imagination of ourselves makes the whole game real.
